Giving Constructive Criticism

Don’t Take Offense - From a rather young age, I was very much aware of two things: (1) I do not accept criticism well and (2) I dislike being told what to do. However, a recent encounter at work got me to thinking about how there is a vast array of people out there who are not good with criticism…whether it is TAKING it or GIVING it.

I want to touch briefly on the aspect of taking criticism. More specifically, the importance of stopping your first reaction should not be overlooked. Take a moment to breathe and think about where this criticism might be coming from. Ask questions and force these people to be more precise. After all, it is what they should have done in the first place!

This ideology of being more detailed goes along with the implementation of a tactic I refer to as the OREO. It correlates to the practice of giving criticism, which is something that many people do not even realize they need help with. Simply, give the individual a compliment, follow it with a precise statement of criticism, and end it with another compliment. If there is actual sincerity and real, genuine love behind your statement, then this will work brilliantly 99% of the time. People do not even realize that you are doing it because they are so focused on the abundance of appreciation and praise coming their way.

The OREO brings a sense of joy to criticism. Want to discover more about this moving method on criticism? Click ---here--- to listen to my podcast!
